Today we are talking about. Raboso!
Like every year, the harvest circle has come full circle with the picking of the grapes of Raboso. We went to interview our winemaker Luca to take us on a discovery of this wonderful grape variety!
How was the 2023 vintage of our Raboso?
The year 2023 was a complicated year for wine production due to a spring weather pattern favorable to cryptogamic diseases.
Fortunately, the prompt action and experience gained at the winery by the vineyard team, headed by Settimo Pizzolato, allowed us to obtain an excellent harvest considering all grape varieties.
Regarding Raboso, the characteristic of this grape variety is that it ripens late in the season, which made its harvest profitable. In fact, the month of September was characterized by sunny days with mild weather, which allowed Raboso to ripen optimally! So we anticipate excellent quality of the finished product even though it will be a long time before we can taste the 2023 vintage.
What are the characteristics of grapes from Raboso?
This grape native to the Piave area, as anticipated, is distinguished by its late ripening. Its characteristics give it a pronounced tannin content and a peculiar acidity, which can be rounded off only with aging in wood.
How does aging in wood characterize our Rabosi DOC Piave and Malanotte?
Aging in wood allows us to create a high quality product, as it provides a complementary nuance to our Raboso. The blended wine rests in oak barrels and barriques before bottle aging. Through aging, this austere wine softens to become pleasant and elegant.
Why are some of the grapes dried? And how does this percentage of dried grapes affect our raboso?
The production specification for Malanotte DOCG calls for the use of a part of raisin grapes (between 15% and 30%), this practice allows to soften the edginess of this wine by drafting it soft and appreciable.
Malanotte 2020 is coming out soon, what should we expect from this vintage?
The 2020 harvest of Raboso gave us a good crop, suitable for producing excellent quality wine.
"Il Barbarossa" 2020 has a deep ruby red color. Its acid note is mitigated by aging, and its main aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum eventually give way to spicy notes of pepper and vanilla and an elegant, full-bodied and non-opulent taste .
How do you recommend tasting it?
To best enjoy a wine like our Malanotte, it is best to serve it at a temperature of about 16 to 18° C and use a large, wide glass to allow the aromas to diffuse.
Meat dishes, such as braised meat, spicy dishes or aged cheeses will be the perfect match for this wine that becomes synonymous with conviviality. Therefore, given the approaching holidays, "Il Barbarossa" 2020 will become a perfect Christmas gift!
